What it does

Attribution and analytics tools connect marketing to results. They match ad exposure, website visits, calls and leads to sold vehicles and repair orders in the DMS. Dealers use them to compare vendors, shift budget and report to owners and OEMs.

Car buying takes weeks and crosses many sites, so no single report tells the whole story. Platform reports tend to credit themselves. Independent attribution helps, but every method makes assumptions. Ask how a tool assigns credit, and test it with holdouts or budget changes where you can.

Privacy changes make tracking harder. Browser limits, consent banners and state privacy laws mean less data per shopper. Tools that rely on the store's own first-party data and sales matchback hold up better than those built on third-party cookies.

Who in the store uses it

  • Dealer principals and general managers: review spend and return.
  • Marketing managers: compare channels and vendors.
  • Dealer group marketing and data teams: standardize reporting across stores.
  • Agencies: report results and justify budgets.

What to ask vendors

  • How do you assign credit across channels, and can we see the method?
  • How do you match marketing to sold vehicles and repair orders?
  • How do you handle consent and state privacy laws?
  • Can we test results with holdouts or budget changes?
  • Can we compare stores in our group on the same terms?
  • Is the tool independent of any media vendor we use?
  • Can we export the data to our own systems?
  • What are the cost and contract term?

Signs it's time to switch

  • Every vendor's report claims credit for the same sale.
  • You can't connect marketing to the DMS.
  • Reports take weeks and arrive too late to act on.
  • Tracking broke after consent or browser changes.
  • Leadership doesn't trust the numbers.
